During the Biscayne Bay Health seminar on Friday, February 19, 2021, during which it was identified that Miami-Dade County and the cities of Aventura, Miami, and Miami Beach needed to better coordinate with sharing knowledge, experience, and an overarching set of goals. One specific issue that would benefit from such coordination is stormwater drains.
The main issue in the bay right now is excessive nutrients, and stormwater is a large conveyor of nutrients from natural debris that is composting in the stormwater systems. When it rains, the nutrients from the decomposed leaves and grass clippings flushes out to the bay. Currently, Aventura and Miami are implementing storm drain filters with expanded street sweeping, because it is effective in keeping everything out of the stormwater system - thus reducing maintenance costs and improving water quality.
This item asks that the City provide its thoughts and for the committee to consider taking action, if necessary.
