In early June of 2020, the Public Works Street Lighting Division began a pilot project which included the installation of seven (7) of the proposed new LED light fixtures mounted on existing light poles on 41st Street, between Royal Palm Avenue and Sheridan Avenue. The project was well received and drew very positive feedback.
At its September 24, 2020 G.O. Bond Oversight Committee meeting, Public Works advised the Committee of the creation of a new sub-project within G.O. Bond Project #40: 41st Street Corridor, to permanently upgrade the existing pedestrian street lighting along 41st Street from Alton Road to Indian Creek Drive with LED Holophane Utility Postop Luminaire. Funding for this sub-project would be taken from Project #40 as part of Tranche 1 in the amount of $85,177.64.
The sub-project falls within the definition approved by the voters in the 2018 referendum. (See attached documents.) The replacement of the fixtures to have LED Holophane Utility Postop Luminaire has been found to be an ideal solution for both the City and Committee members. The work will be completed by in-house City of Miami Beach Public Works lighting technicians, which reduces the cost of installation.
On September 28, 2020, the Planning Department announced the project would fall under the Design Review Board (DRB) process. (See attached DRB application process and schedule).
On October 12, 2020, Public Works corresponded with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and advised them of the City's proposed project for the pedestrian lighting improvements along the 41st Street Corridor and provided them with all referenced technical specifications for their review and approval.
Public Works is planning to submit a DRB application before its deadline on November 9, 2020, for the first available DRB meeting scheduled for January 5, 2021.
Once the project is approved by the DRB and FDOT, Public Works plans to proceed with a requisition and purchase order to place an order for new luminaires. The estimated lead time is three (3) to four (4) weeks.
The estimated installation start date will be February 8, 2021 and take approximately 30 days.
