SUBJECT:DISCUSS PROGRAMMING THE NORMANDY FOUNTAIN PLAZA

HISTORY:

In FY 19-20, the City of Miami Beach Department of Tourism and Culture, in collaboration with Prism Creative Group, produced a curated series of community events at the Normandy Fountain Plaza, including the following:

 

Motown Brunch featuring Yoli Mayor(Normandy Fountain Plaza)

Milonga at The Fountain (Normandy Fountain Plaza)

Rhythm & Flow Wellness Event (Normandy Fountain Plaza)

Endless Summer: Reggae Legends Tribute (Normandy Fountain Plaza)

Fall Pumpkin Fest (Normandy Fountain Plaza)

 

The average cost of each event was $10,000.

ANALYSIS:

As proposed in FY 20-21 budget, the City of Miami Beach is making a  significant investment in the cultural programming portfolio of North Beach, totaling $442,140. These investments are noted as follows:

 

Resort Tax Sponsorship: ($150,000)

  • North Beach Programming - $50,000 (former Food Truck funding)
  • July 4th Celebration - $100,000
  • Culture Crawl - $100,000 (Citywide-a portion of these funds are dedicated for use in North Beach)

 

Cultural Arts Council Funding for Cultural Presenters – Performances in North Beach ($136,100- rounded)

Cultural performances scheduled to take place in North Beach include the following Cultural Presenters:

 

  • The Dance Now! Ensemble – $16,000
  • Brazilian Film Festival - $15,000
  • FUNDArte - $15,000
  • Miami Light Project - $7,800
  • Nu Deco Ensemble - $16,800
  • Young Musician Unite - $16,000
  • Miami Children’s Chorus - $10,000
  • South Florida Symphony Orchestra - $8,000
  • Buskerfest $15,500
  • Florida Grand Opera- $16,000

 

Cultural Arts Council Funding for Cultural Anchors- ($106,040)

  • The Rhythm Foundation - $30,000 (plus $68,040 in COVID-19 Emergency Funding)

 

Cultural Arts Council Funding for Arts in the Parks at the North Beach Bandshell - ($25,000)

  • A series of five free opera and theatre performances taking place at the North Beach Bandshell

 

Community Benefit Fund Waiver Program ($25,000) 

Additional support from cultural programming in North Beach is being granted through the Community Benefit Fund Waiver Program and includes the following performances through December 2020*:

 

  •  South Florida Seniors in Action- Miami Beach Salsa Festival- October 3, 2020
  •  Miami and Broward One Carnival Host Committee- Miami Carnival Weekend- October 8-11, 2020
  • Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts- Free Gospel Sundays- November 8, 2020
  • Dance Now!- Program 1: Masterpiece in Motion- December 13, 2020, 7PM
  •  Seraphic Fire –Seraphic Fire Christmas- December 20, 2020

 

*Performances will be produced via live-stream if in person audiences are not allowed due to COVID-19.

CONCLUSION:

Within the programming portfolio noted above, $50,000 in Resort Tax Sponsorship for North Beach programming remains available.
