COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Commissioner Steven Meiner
DATE:July  29, 2020

SUBJECT:DISCUSS, AND TAKE ACTION IF NECESSARY, THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A POLICY TO IDENTIFY 911 EMERGENCIES PRIOR TO A CALLER BEING AUTOMATICALLY PLACED ON HOLD DURING HIGH-VOLUME PERIODS.

ANALYSIS

Residents have raised several complaints of 911 calls automatically being placed on hold. Upon further investigation, the City of Miami Beach does not have a policy on how to deal with high call volumes. In contrast, other municipalities have various ways of solving issues such as prioritizing life or death calls and placing others on hold or forwarding calls to other nearby agencies.

The intention is to determine if there is an inclination to request the City Manager to create and implement a policy to immediately address the status quo of potentially placing callers on hold.
