COMMISSION MEMORANDUM |
| | | |
| | | | | | | | TO: | Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission | | FROM: | Commissioner Micky Steinberg | | DATE: | July 29, 2020 | | |
| SUBJECT: | DISCUSSION REGARDING INTERSECTION AT 41ST STREET AND INDIAN CREEK DRIVE MOT. |
| | | |
| | | | | | | | ANALYSIS
| During the ongoing construction around 41st and Indian Creek Drive, the MOT has called for elimination of west bound crossing traffic, which permits two continuous turning lanes from southbound to westbound similar to what we have at 63rd Street. It is evident that this has had positive effects by reducing traffic and likely making the roadway safer by reducing incidents of drivers merging into the turn lane at the last moment to minimize their time in congestion. It also creates an opportunity to provide more green light time to both southbound and eastbound traffic at the intersection (further reducing congestion at the intersection and relieving eastbound congestion on 41st Street). Additionally, once Alton Road in Mid-Beach is under construction in the not too distant future, it is likely we will see an even greater demand at this intersection that will benefit from the current traffic flow configuration (except the elimination of southbound flow) becoming permanent. However, what is less clear is what the negative impact of forcing northbound Collins Avenue traffic that is heading to westbound 41st Street to the next signalized intersection has on traffic and safety in the area, if any. As such, I would like the administration to bring back recommendations on the most efficient configuration of the area (41st to 44th Street and Collins Avenue to Indian Creek Drive) in an expedited way that will allow for a decision and implementation before the end of the current MOT. |
