COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Vice-Mayor Mark Samuelian
DATE:July  29, 2020

SUBJECT:DISCUSSION AND SUBSEQUENT REFERRAL TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE CONCERNING THE STATUS OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SLOW STREETS PROGRAM IN THE FLAMINGO PARK NEIGHBORHOOD.

ANALYSIS

This discussion and subsequent referral to NQLC should focus on the status of the implementation of the "Slow Streets" program in the Flamingo Park neighborhood.

There is an “Open” and “Slow” streets movement worldwide, and there are numerous examples attached. Residential “Slow Streets” prioritize pedestrian/cyclist use within the street, while still permitting automobiles. Signage/barricades discourage thru traffic, but access is maintained for local residents, deliveries and parking at all times.  Drivers are encouraged to slow down and yield to any person that may be in the street.

This concept has resident support as well. During their July 6th meeting, the Flamingo Park Neighborhood Association discussed this program and adopted a supportive resolution (see attached resolution).
