COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Commissioner Steven Meiner
DATE:May  22, 2020

SUBJECT:DISCUSSION ON THE PROGRAM TO CONVERT ACTUATED PEDESTRIAN WALK SIGNALS TO NON-TOUCH FIXED PEDESTRIAN SIGNALS.

ANALYSIS

- The National Association of City Transportation Officials has issued a list of practices for cities to respond to Covid-19.

One practice involves reprogramming pedestrian crosswalks so no one has to touch a potentially contaminated high touchpoint button to get a “walk” signal to cross a street.

- Providence, Rhode Island, Asheville, North Carolina, and Brookline and Cambridge, Massachusetts, are all in the process of implementing this program.
