COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Commissioner Ricky Arriola
DATE:December  11, 2019

SUBJECT:DISCUSS THE TEMPORARY PUBLIC ART INITIATIVE.

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

The City recently commissioned Leandro Erlich to create "Order of Importance" on the beach for Art Basel. The exhibition was well received and has attracted a lot of positive media attention. However, my original intent for the temporary public art initiative was to have temporary art placed in commercial areas to increase foot traffic and help businesses succeed. The Botero exhibit on Lincoln Road is a perfect example. Additionally, the Erlich exhibit is supposed to last 15 days. I had envisioned for the City to install a public art piece that would be available to the community and tourists for a more extended period of time. I ask City staff to consider how we can improve this initiative for 2020.
