Many residents expressed concern over the recent sunny day flooding that occurred at the beginning of September. I ask our Public Works team to present the conditions they observed around Miami Beach to the City Commission.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released a report on July 2019 on the state of high tide flooding across the United States. The report stated that the southeast United States could see sunny day flooding events average 7 to 15 days a year by 2030, and 25 to 75 days by 2050. In lower-lying areas like Miami Beach, that number is expected to be higher. Due to El Nino, NOAA predicts that this year and early 2020 will break records for tidal flooding. The City of Miami Beach must take this expert analysis into account when building for the future.
