I would like to refer the above-referenced item to the October 23, 2019 Neighborhood/Community Affairs Committee (“NCAC”) to consider the following actions:
1) Repeal Resolution 2019-30826, which named the northern Miami Beach Convention Center park as “Collins Canal Park,”
2) Re-name Collins Canal Park as “Muhammad Ali Park.”
In order to facilitate the renaming of the park, I would also propose that NCAC further recommend an amendment to the City’s naming ordinance, codified in Article VI of Chapter 82 of the City Code, which would exempt the park from current referendum requirements. This is not a new thing; there is precedent regarding exemptions for naming of public facilities, such as Miami City Ballet, Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, New World Symphony, and (most recently), “Muhammad Ali Way.”
