Mayor and City Commission accept the recommendation of the Land Use and Development Committee, at its July 24, 2019 meeting, to amend the Blueways Master Plan and remove all references to potential public waterway access points located in single-family home districts.

The Blueways Master Plan (the “Plan”), adopted by the City Commission on June 10, 2015, is a conceptual plan that explores our system of waterways, and identifies areas of interest where the City may expand aquatic recreational opportunities.

The Plan identifies over 20 areas of interest; however, components of the Plan do not represent a definite improvement. As such, each area of interest must be individually vetted as the opportunity presents itself.

Over the years, residents of the community have opposed public waterway access launch points from the Cherokee Avenue street-end, and other street-ends in residential areas, citing lack of parking for the general public as one main concern.

At the July 24, 2019 Land Use and Development Committee meeting (the “Committee”), the Committee moved to amend the Blueways Master Plan to remove all references to potential public waterway access points from single-family home districts.

At the July 31, 2019 City Commission meeting, as part of the discussion on the Evaluation and Appraisal Report, the City Commission accepted the Committee’s recommendation to revise the Blueways Master Plan and prohibit public waterway access points from single-family home districts.
