On June 5, 2019, the Mayor and the City Commission directed the city administration to issue an RFLI to gauge interest from production companies and cultural producers to activate a month long series as part of our March 2020 Strategy.
The administration believes that having engaging and culturally relevant programming, located directly on the beach in the Lummus Park area, will help to re-imagine Miami Beach during that time of year. It was the intent that, with the release of this RFLI, the City administration would be able to secure a few ideas that we could bring back to the Commission on July 17, 2019 to discuss more in depth potential.
The programming should be large in nature and think outside the box. Programming must be ticketed, so we are able to track and control the number of people on site at any given time, and also allow us to package these offerings with Miami Beach hotels, to ensure the greatest economic impact on our City.
On June 13, 2019, the City administration released the RFLI (document attached) to the events and production industry, with a submission date of July 2, 2019.
On June 28, 2019 the administration extended the submission date to July 8, 2019 at the request of some production companies, to allow them additional time to build out their submissions.
On July 8, 2019, the administration received only one RFLI submission:
TEAM ACT - "SOUTH BEACH LIVE"
This submission was sent by a group of companies who have come together for the purpose of this RFLI - (The Parker Company, Frameless Creative, ACT Productions, Innovative Group, and Eventstar).
This submission is proposing a month long festival of music, art, sports, exercise, fashion, food & beverage, which focus on diversity, social consciousness, and environmental responsibility, all wrapped into a fenced entertainment venue on the sands of South Beach. The idea would be top produce a daily free programming activation space during the day, and a ticketed event zone at night during March 2020.
Activations could range from music to sports to exercise.
PROS:
- multi purpose facility to use during the day for free or low cost activations
- can change the use of this facility as needed (music, sport, fashion, etc).
- month long activation, which will give multiple programming options which can be changed easily
- locally based companies who have a personal stake in the activations and their success
CONS
- this group is looking to design, manage, and help source sponsorships, but would ultimately require funding from the City of Miami Beach.
No other RFLI submissions were received. The administration received communications from two production companies who were interested, but given the short time frame, and full month long production requirements, felt it would be too rushed. They did voice that they would be happy to put forth their submissions for following years, if needed.
The administration believes this proposal has a lot of potential and we would like to continue to speak with the applicant to further understand the financial needs, timelines and creative proposal in order to execute their visioning and to better understand the full scope. We believe that this information could be put together for the September City Commission meeting, where the administration would be in a much better position to make a firm recommendation on the best way to move forward, in order to achieve our desired results for March 2020.
