COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Commissioner Mark Samuelian
DATE:June  5, 2019

SUBJECT:DISCUSSION CONCERNING THE INCREASE IN SEAWEED IN MIAMI BEACH, THE CITY'S/COUNTY'S EFFORTS TO ADDRESS, AND LATEST DEVELOPMENTS.

ANALYSIS

Reducing seaweed accumulation along the shoreline, its visibility and odor, while at the same time preserving its ecological value is part of the City's Beachfront Management Plan. As part of this plan, the City of Miami Beach is responsible for activities that occur on the beach, while Miami-Dade County is responsible for beach maintenance including seaweed.

However, during the month of May, 2019 there has been a higher than usual accumulation of seaweed along certain parts of the City's shoreline that has led to resident concern. In response, an LTC was issued on May 9 (attached) to describe the situation. As such, this discussion item should focus on what actions have been taken to address the issue and potential next steps.
