SUBJECT:CRIME IN MIAMI BEACH

ANALYSIS:

During the April 24, 2019 NCAC meeting, Commissioners requested that the MBPD present on the following topics during the May 20, 2019 NCAC meeting:

 

  1. Final Memorial Day Weekend (MDW) Plan
  2. Update on Police succession
  3. Personnel changes within the Police Department

 

 

Final Memorial Day Plan

As announced via LTC 234-2019, the MBPD is will host two public meetings to share information on the City’s annual Memorial Day Weekend plans. The meetings will highlight a variety of details including street closures, access to parking, changes to traffic routes and information concerning the Flamingo Park neighborhood. Chamber of Commerce board members will be briefed at the Chamber’s monthly meeting on May 7. Two briefings for the public will be held on Thursday May 9th and Thursday May 16th at 6:00pm. Both public meetings will be hosted in the Major James Smith Community Room, located in the Miami Beach Police Department at 1100 Washington Avenue. All members of the community are welcome to attend.

 The Police Department will not be able to provide feedback on these meetings in writing prior to the NCAC meeting. We will, however, be ready to discuss any feedback, concerns and input provided by residents and any changes/updates to the MDW plan at the May 20 NCAC meeting.

 

 

Update on Police Succession

Police Department is waiting an announcement from the City Manager regarding appointment of the next Police Chief.

 

 

Personnel Changes within the Police Department

There were recent changes in the assignments of command staff members due to the retirement of one veteran Captain. These changes were addressed via the City Manager’s email to City Commissioners and Mayor, on April 2nd, 2019. See email chain attached. The Operations Division Commander, Major Acosta, will be available to provide the NCAC with an update on the transitions of these senior leaders into their new commands.
