COMMISSION MEMORANDUM

TO:Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission
FROM:Vice-Mayor Steven Meiner
DATE:March  27, 2023

SUBJECT:REFERRAL TO THE PUBLIC SAFETY AND NEIGHBORHOOD QUALITY OF LIFE COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS THE FEASIBILITY OF IMPLEMENTING A TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE SYSTEM IN ORDER TO MONITOR REAL-TIME TRAFFIC AND OPTIMIZE THE FLOW OF VEHICLES THROUGHOUT OUR CITY.

ANALYSIS

Please place on the March 27, 2023 agenda a referral to the Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee to discuss the feasibility of developing a Traffic Management Software System in order to address traffic in our City. Currently, the City does not have real-time information on traffic conditions within Miami Beach. For example, if a contractor is blocking a lane during rush hour, the City currently has no program to alert it of these conditions.

Whether through the use of cameras, drones, or software programs, Miami Beach needs to collect real-time traffic data in order to help alleviate traffic congestion and ensure a smooth flow of vehicles in our City.

Moreover, Miami-Dade County reports data from thousands of traffic loops placed under roadway surfaces. The loops detect and gather data such as the number of vehicles along the roadways and the speed of such vehicles. The county’s traffic control center gathers this data in order to improve traffic flow via traffic signal timing. I would like for the Administration to contact Miami-Dade County so that Miami Beach can obtain such real-time traffic data in order to improve our traffic flow.
