On December 9, 2020, the Mayor and the City Commission unanimously passed a resolution directing the Miami Beach Police Department to develop “a comprehensive plan about data sharing regarding arrest information and people released from jail.” That item received vast support from residents, including SOBESafe, to establish a tracking system for cases in the criminal justice system. Currently the City of Miami Beach has no database of information as to what happens to those individuals in the criminal justice system post-arrest. Such a database should include the name of the defendant, the assigned judge, charges being levied against the defendant, the maximum sentence possible, the bond amounts, the maximum bond amount, negotiated plea agreement or sentence issued by the court.
On May 12, 2021, the Mayor and the City Commission gave direction to the City Administration to present a report at the June 23, 2021 Commission meeting on available options to collect and track post-arrest information (see May 12, 2021 minutes).
This item intends to discuss the Administration’s progress consistent with the directions given at the December 9, 2020 and May 12, 2021 Commission meetings.
